Historic Charm, Modern Function Kitchen located near Ann Arbor

In Ann Arbor’s historic Pittsfield Village neighborhood, Marsha transformed our client’s small, outdated 8' x 7'6" kitchen into a highly functional and personalized space—all without altering the original footprint. By relocating the sink to the corner, we created enough room for an apartment-sized dishwasher and added much-needed drawer storage. We upgraded the gas range to a sleek induction range and gave it a more built-in appearance with a custom panel and extended countertop—improving both aesthetics and safety for little ones on the move. The new wood-look LVP flooring, fresh wall paint, and refreshed built-in pantry modernize the space while respecting its 1940s-era charm. To meet local code requirements, which call for outlets every 24 to 48 inches in updated kitchens, we installed a pop-up power outlet just below the window—an elegant solution where a traditional wall outlet wasn't possible due to the low window height. To maximize every inch of their 700 sq.ft. condo, Marsha even carved out additional storage above the stairwell, making this small kitchen feel smart, spacious, and uniquely theirs. To bring the design to life, we chose materials that were as functional as they were meaningful. Showplace’s sleek, modern Aspen door style in a warm, inviting shade of white brightens the room while offering timeless appeal. The glass tile backsplash from Lunada Bay Tile adds soft shimmer and gentle movement, thoughtfully chosen to echo the clients’ shared chapter living aboard a sailboat. For the floors, we selected a durable, low-maintenance wood-look LVP from Shaw Flooring—perfect for everyday living in a compact home. Contemporary hardware from Hardware Resources ties the whole design together with clean lines and practical elegance, making this petite kitchen feel both elevated and deeply personal.
